Drunken biking

One of the cottage industries in these villages is making Lao-Lao. Lao-Lao is a rice based liquor made in an extremely simple fashion. What you see in the photo is pretty much it.

Simple rice mash is kept cooking in the drum, while the steam passes through the cool water bath on top. The steam then condenses into Lao-Lao, with an alcohol count around 50 proof. That oh-so-sanitary blue jug is the collector.

This stuff is just slightly more expensive than bottled water.
